Does bass speaker size REALLY matter? (10 vs 12 vs 15 in a Venue)

    They are all very similar. I liked number 5 best. Its mad though. To a random non musician in the audience at a gig , theyd never hear as much difference. They wouldn't give a hoot. We are such obsessive snobs at the end of the day. I had a '72 Fender Mustang, it had been modded back in the day and it was beautiful. Such a rich smooth cut through a mix. Miss that bad boy badly

    Thanks, Philip, for the video. My two cents - definitely the neck influences in the perception and the fell - but comparing two good instruments, it doesn't change that much the sound by itself, in a crude, "scientific" manner, wave formation, etc. However, it changes the player; so, as the player better connects with the instrument, the better the player plays, the better the instrument sounds. Since the neck is the primary connection between the instrument and the player, it has the most "perceptional" and psychological interference with the act of playing. From this point of view, your vintage P-bass has the undeniable edge of a tool played and improved by decades of music creation and the emotional connection you developed with. That said, what actually crudely interferes with sound generation are the strings and pickups. From this point of view, neither of the instruments was vintage, since you had to replace the pickups with the Fralins. The main takeaway - a vintage instrument isn't better than a new one by itself. A good vintage instrument can have the edge over a good new instrument as we can't rule the human factor. However, the distances people are going searching for vintage instruments and the amounts charged aren't justified. You were so fortunate to have the opportunity to get this wonderful 60s instrument, living in the US and being in the right place at the right time. Thousands of good musicians will never have the same privilege worldwide. But that should not be the main factor of musicality and inspiration.

    RE: Medium (32") scale basses... I experimented quite a bit with these basses because I was a massive Les Claypool fan, and his main Carl Thompson 4 string bass is 32" scale. Just for me (personally), I much prefer the timbre and tension of the D and G strings at 32". At 34", the G string is especially bright and tight, making it sound thin and harder to bend. However, I prefer the timbre and tension of the E and A strings at 34", which would make me a natural candidate for a multi-scale bass except... I play fretless... sigh.

  • @bongosock
    @bongosock 8 часов назад

    RE: reversed headstock / length of string beyond the nut... From a physics point of view, as a string is put under tension to bring it up to pitch it will stretch. How much stretch is in the string is calculated over the entire length from tuning peg to bridge. The nut does not effect this. The 'stretchiness' of the string will effect the way it feels to pluck and bend.

    i think changing the outlook from comparison to inspiration really helps 😁, i just brought my first bass after a 20year break, i loved it as a teenager but only took a few lessons (they were group based) and lost all inspiration with this exact mindset, when someone in the would do something better than me. so i sold my bass and moved on, now I'm actively looking for these videos of people (much like yourself) to inspire my playing and motivate me to learn the instrument. thanks for sharing this... I think I need to look into "a shed situation" now with all of these things in mind. Thanks again.

    Your trampoline metaphor was pure genius. Such an incredible way to articulate and bring clarity to a concept that you can't really teach even though anyone can learn it. The hear with your ears like you see with your eyes exercise was equally as impressive considering how subtlety you pulled everyone into the video. It reminded me of the way that when there's a nice groove going people are starting tapping their foot or moving her head without even realizing it. Phenomenal teaching. There are many time periods that people may wish that they were born and lived in. Yeah being able to afford a house and put the kids through school while working at the loval grocery store as a cashier might be everything to some people . I don't think I could ever give up living in a our present time. To my knowledge there has never been a time before now where a regular guy like myself could have access to so many high caliber teachers that generously inpart lifetimes of their hard learned and earned lessons ...while asking for virtually nothing in return. Respect 👊🏼✨

    I wonder if setting the mic say a meter from the speaker might have been more representative of what we actually hear? I feel we’re getting a lot more if effect of the bigger speaker hitting the mic with more air at the same distance over the cumulative effect of multiple speakers. But otherwise thanks so much for this, the internet is really full of a lot of BS on this

    Someone I know once had a successful music career as a young person and then decided to play jazz. Very soon he abandoned electric guitar for piano, took a degree in composition, studying all styles of classical music and jazz, apparently mastered all of them woodshedding for the last 40+ years. But none of us have heard a note of his music in all this time. I suppose Heaven will be the place where we can hear all the fruits of his solo labors for my entire adult life, but not this world.

    I have a separate place just for music (My channel is a one-man recording studio of mostly cover songs), but I take long breaks. I once quit playing every instrument for four years. I'm on hiatus from recording right now, have been for over a year. This way it's never work. When I do record, I go eyeballs deep. Then when I don't feel like it anymore, I don't do it anymore. Can't wait for the next channel comeback though, because every iteration of the channel evolves and improves. And right now my videos have gotten really cool already. These long breaks are my secret weapon. They even seem to have a way of breaking my through my plateaus. The best way to overcome a plateau, for me, seems to be time off. The brain plasticity and muscle memory, who knows why, but it works.

    I have a stomp xl and I'm in a cover band. Once of the best things about putting *everything* on the stomp is if we go from song A to song B, I can simply press "go to the next song in the setlist" and signal chain is now set for song B. No need to turn some effects on and off and twiddle settings for every song. Zero downtime.
